Of course, as with any kind of fishing, bait is needed. You can use a variety of baits, depending upon your preference. Worms, spinner baits, crank baits, jigs, and grubs as well as smaller fish, such as sardines and mackerel, are used.
You will need a rod and reel. If you use a conventional rod you will need a conventional reel, and if you use the spinning rod you will also need a spinning reel. The one you use will be simply a matter of choice.
